“Heart is the ruler over summer. The heart is the root of life and generates all changes in spirit.”

The summer is ruled by the heart. Not only should we take in what will nourish the heart we have the chance to nourish our hearts spiritually. Our hearts are home to consciousness, spirit (also called Shen), sleep, memory, and it also houses the mind.

Of course the heart is related to the nervous system and the brain. You know how your emotions effect your pulse rate and blood pressure.

Besides the proper nutrition we need to focus on giving the heart it’s “spiritual nutrition”. Some Taoist/Kabbalistic exercises for he heart are: practice feeling small in comparison to the wonders of the world. Take walks among the trees, look at the expanse of the ocean, meditate on the sunset. If you are in a big city walk among the tall buildings and think about those that brought those wonders into being, admire the strength of the weed growing through a crack in the sidewalk or an ant carrying a load 100x it’s size.

Since speech is brought forth from the heart we can take time to improve our awareness of our speech. When we do this we strengthen our heart. Heart “shen” focusing practices are prayer, affirmations, mantras, and devotional sayings.

While you are doing this DON’T use ice cream or iced drinks to cool you down. Coldness causes contraction in the body. It will then hold in heat and interferes with digestion. Instead use salads, sprouts, fruit, cucumbers, tofu, flower and leaf teas. Apples, watermellon, lemons, and lime are also good. If real heat exhaustion sets in make a mung bean soup or tea.

Also we have the warming/dispersing herbs to help us in hot weather. It may seem silly to use flavorings to increase warmth. In the long run, however, they bring the heat in your body to the surface to be dispersed. In this way you will be less effected by the heat. Things like red and green peppers, chyanne, fresh ginger, horse radish, and black pepper. Tumeric and cumin are also excellent. Use these in limited amounts. This will increase your ability to deal with cold weather when winter comes. They keep “heat” conditions from lodging within the heart.

February contains several planetary transits which connect us with the sign of Pisces and its planetary ruler, Neptune:

Venus conjoins Neptune in Aquarius – 2/8
Venus enters Pisces – 2/11
Sun conjoins Neptune – 2/14
Sun enters Pisces – 2/18
Mercury conjoins Neptune – 2/27
Mercury enters Pisces – 3/1

So, there is a pattern: Venus, the Sun, and Mercury each conjoin Neptune in Aquarius and then move into Pisces. These three planets usually will tend to constellate in Aquarius and Pisces around this time of year. However, this year is unique in that they all neatly fall within a month’s time and conjunct Neptune, Pisces’ ruler, before doing so. I took this as a call to pay attention to what Neptune/Pisces might have to say to us right now, as if we’re all kind of going through a collective Neptune transit this month. Neptune and Pisces, rulers of the 12th house, connect to our spiritual life, the unconscious, the dream world, and the hidden aspects of our lives and ourselves.

“Neptune is the mysterious, the unfathomable planet. It greatly influences our spiritual life, in the positive and the negative sense.” Reinhold Ebertin, Transits.

With a spotlight on Neptune and Pisces, this month is less about doing and more about being. It is a time to go with the flow, to still the mental chatter, and to observe what is when you stop trying to make things happen. As westerners, we are often driven by the gratification cycle of action + results = reward. The reward may be monetary, or it may be somebody’s approval, or it may be the approval that we withhold from ourselves unless we are doing something “useful.” Neptune and Pisces, both part of the same archetypal field, is about relaxing into the flow of something larger and all-consuming that always exists all around you. While the phrase “relaxing into the flow” sounds nice and inviting, the real experience can be difficult to get to, and even downright scary for some of us (visual of me raising my hand here). Neptune/Pisces dissolves, much like water begins to dissolve and erode whatever is placed within it. We might feel like we’re losing something if we’re not accomplishing, doing, achieving, tasking.

It’s as if this whole month is about looking at our collective resistance to meditation and Neptunian experiences. I find that the panic that rises up in me when I sit down to meditate is that I am not “Dena-ing”… that is, I’m not doing a task with which I can be identified. I’m also invisible when I meditate (not literally), in the sense that I’m not doing anything for which I will be recognized. Nobody’s going to notice me over here meditating; nobody sees how hard I’m working (irony intended). What am I getting out of this, right? These are the voices that come up. As Robert Hand puts it in Planets in Transit:

“…Neptune often has an ego-denying influence, which may make you feel discouraged, futile, undeserving and unworthy.”

But this “ego-denying influence” seems to be the medicine we need, paradoxically, to remind ourselves of who we are and what is truly important to us. When we get caught in the gratification-cycle model, the ego begins to feed upon itself, and hungers for more of the same food: approval and other externals which we believe show us our value. The danger is that we can lose perspective of the grand vision, our higher purpose, or the meaning behind all the tasking we are doing. Steven Forrest writes about Neptune transits:

“When Neptune strikes a chord, remember this: You are the problem. Something precious within you has become dissociated from your biographical life. Meanwhile, however, your outer self is going merrily along its way, trying to pretend that those old patterns still have life in them. Listen to that deeper voice. Allow it to guide you. Imagine. Dream. Flow.” The Changing Sky

During a Neptunian time, we need to be still, slow down, and forget who we currently think we are in order to reconnect with our soul. We might think we have it all figured out, and such woo-woo phrases as “go within” set our eyes to rolling. Like, I don’t have time to go within. Right? But if we miss this calling for a pause, a moment of rest, a time to daydream, then our actions become hollow. They drive us, instead of being inspired from us. And the world loses for us its mystery and beauty. Life becomes like a treadmill of endless duties, signifying nothing.

So, February is a time to…ahem…go within. Perhaps for you it will be to take a cup of tea, sit on the couch, and stare out the window. For an hour. Or maybe it will be an absolutely purposeless stroll in the woods (not even trying to “get some exercise.”) Or maybe, rather than hopping out of bed for that first cup of coffee, you want to spend some time to reflect on your dreams, playing with the images. Who knows where these things will lead?

On New Year’s Eve, we experienced the last Eclipse of 2009! The Eclipse was at 10 Cancer and opposed a ton of planets in Capricorn. A lunar eclipse involves an opposition between the Sun and the Moon in the heavens, and reflects a period of time to begin resolving and wrapping up the issues of the houses it lands in. For example, if the Eclipse lands in your 7th house of relationships then wrapping up matters involving relationships and partnerships is an area you can take proactive action in. Full Moon’s bring us closure!

Step 1: Get out a candle (any candle) and anoint it with your favorite oil. I use a banishing oil to remove negative influences or resolve situations that are no longer beneficial to me. On a piece of paper write your name down three times. Ask yourself the following question: What do you need to resolve in your life? This could be in any of the significant areas of your life (love, career problems, financial difficulties)

Since this full Moon eclipse is in the sign of Cancer, issues surrounding safety, emotional security, and the need to be nurtured are highlighted.

Step 2: On the same piece of paper, write down the answers to the following question: How do you feel secure, safe, and nurtured?

The Cancer Full Moon opposes a stellium (3 of more planets in a sign) in Capricorn. Capricorn energy is about slow progress, goals, and build accomplishments through reputation, hard work, and great discipline.

Step 3: Where have I focused wasteful energy that prevents my goals from being achieved? If this area is hard for you, then you might want to use a 3-card tarot spread to discover where you have channeled your energy that is actually preventing you from reaching your goals.

With this Eclipse, there is the tendency to get caught up in our accomplishments rather than listening to our inner voice that needs nurturing and inner soul food. Since this Eclipse is a Full Moon eclipse and a natural opposition, then the universe is instructing us to bring balance into our lives. How do we bring balance to our ambitions and our need for self care and nourishment? How do we equally go for the gold and take care of ourselves at the same time.

Step 4: Fold the paper up and place it under your pillow until the Full Moon. Placing something under our pillow can bring information through our dreams that gives us insight into our difficulties. Dreams act as conduits of information from the unconscious to the conscious mind.

In ancient astrology, Saturn is referred to as a dark omen, evil, and reflective of the devil’s dominion over earthly life.  Saturn’s rulership over laws, boundaries, and limits subjects human being to a more sober reality of responsibilities and the necessity to forge our own path in the world.  Although these restrictions imposed upon us are perceived as threatening to our individual freedoms, and a times depressing, Saturn gives us the gift of self-sufficiency and points to the work that needs to be done in our lives.
